Chapter 284: Within Range
“You, if you want to stand out, that’s one thing, but never let anyone realize that you can bind a Spirit, detach it, or manipulate someone else’s Spirit, alright?” Dinoss said, his face showing signs of exasperation.
“Generally speaking, unless it’s something related to the country, if a contract with a Spirit is broken, it means the practitioner is inexperienced. However, if it’s too easy, it’s bound to attract attention,” the Butler said, maintaining his usual calm demeanor, a smile gracing his lips. The Butler certainly recovers quickly from anything related to branches.
“Indeed. It will definitely turn into a struggle between nations or nobles, or perhaps the Temple will get involved. If it falls into other hands, there might be a point where it’s better to let it go. If you don’t wish for glory in the country, you must keep it hidden at all costs,” Ash added, his expression serious.
“Aren’t you going to stop me? Especially if I were to arbitrarily release a contracted Spirit?”
“Well, you see. After being an Adventurer for so long, I’ve seen Spirits get entangled and used for dangerous experiments,” Dinoss waved his hand dismissively.
Now that I think about it, he was a legendary Gold Rank Adventurer. He must have seen far more of humanity’s darker sides than I have.
“Considering Gene’s safety, I can’t tell you to do it, but I can’t tell you to stop either. Just make sure you don’t get caught,” he said, his tone turning serious as he glared at me, almost as if to intimidate.
“Got it.” I nodded solemnly.
“I couldn’t figure out how you made the Spirit go berserk, so as long as you don’t overuse it, you should be fine. I won’t pry into your methods, but may I ask how you adjusted the Light magic?” I received the Butler’s approval for not getting caught.
…Can you hear me? Right now… I’m calling out directly to your heart— I just spoke to the Spirit in my mind, and I wasn’t even focusing on a specific Spirit. If that got me caught, that would be terrifying.
“I had it set to the same brightness as the one the Vice Guild Master used—no, wait, I mean the glasses.”
“You really have no intention of remembering people’s names, do you? What Note is asking is what you used to specify the same level, right?” Dinoss caught me out for not remembering names!
But this line of questioning seems to suggest that there’s a procedure involved in specifying the strength or size of the light!
“…” I fell silent for a moment.
“By the way, you were chanting something, weren’t you? Was that the incantation for the specification? It seems rather confidential—no, you must be just winging it again, right?” Retze always seems to hit the nail on the head.
“I just asked for a light around the Orochi, about the same level as those glasses,” I clarified, making sure I had specified.
“…Note?”
“Lord Gene, would you like me to introduce a Mage? It would be difficult to pretend without knowing the ordinary,” the Butler smiled. I was within range!
“Please do!” I definitely want to see what kind of magic circles are available.
“Just throwing this out there, but who do you plan to introduce?”
“Lord Haulon.”
“That’s not ordinary!!!” Dinoss shouted upon hearing the name the Butler mentioned.
“Haulon, could it be the Mage who was in King Wolf Balmoa’s party?” Retze seemed to separate Dinoss and Balmoa in his recognition. Is it just my imagination?
But if it’s King Wolf’s party—
“Legendary?”
“Yes, legendary. However, I’ve heard he’s quite eccentric. I didn’t know he was still alive…” Retze pondered, likely sorting through information about this Haulon.
“Because he’s eccentric, even if Lord Gene is a bit odd, he probably won’t say anything to anyone. He dislikes interacting with people,” the Butler said cheerfully, but does that mean I’m being thrown into the company of someone who seems to hate people?
And so, today came to an end. The bed here doesn’t have a canopy, but there’s a sturdy frame extending from the bed for hanging fabric, so I set up a hammock, making it feel like a bunk bed.
Just in case I accidentally fall, I put Dinoss below. Karn remained as immovable as a mountain by the fireplace. I had no choice but to open my envelope-shaped sleeping bag and lend it to him. He might not sleep, but I included some alcohol, so he would probably pour himself a drink.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Fortress City, starting with the Temple. I’ll drop by the Adventurer’s Guild in the early afternoon and then figure out the rest of the schedule.
I wonder if there will be a chance to hunt Wild Boars or Wild Chickens?
