Chapter 145: First, Let’s Write Resumes
The first thing Rest did was to recruit his classmates. During lunch breaks and any spare moments, he approached those he had a friendly rapport with.
“Ah, of course! Please let me join!”
“I want to participate too. I have experience in monster hunting.”
The first to step forward were his friends, Ruid Jistal and Maurice Louis.
“I’m the third son, so I don’t have any territory or noble title to inherit. But if there’s a chance for independence, I’d gladly join the development efforts!”
“I plan to take over the family business, but… I want money, so count me in.”
Ruid flashed a broad grin, unabashedly stating his motivation for joining. Maurice, too, casually mentioned his desire for money.
This time, Rest was looking for individuals willing to assist in monster hunting as collaborators for territory development. However, those who excelled would be considered for positions as vassals of the Clover Count House. To be a vassal of a newly established noble family with no subjects might seem like a daunting and unappealing task at first glance.
Yet, those with foresight understood the potential. Becoming a vassal of a newly established noble family with abundant territory could lead to lucrative positions, such as the governor of a new town. In some cases, they might even be granted a portion of land and recognized as lower nobles, given the surplus of land available.
“I want to join too! Count me in!”
“Me too! I won’t let anyone get ahead of me!”
“Let me in! I’ll definitely prove my worth!”
One by one, classmates raised their hands to join. Moreover, it seemed that word of Rest attending school had spread, as students from other classes and grades began to gather around. Most were commoners or the younger sons of noble families. A few oddballs even approached with the casual demeanor of part-time job seekers, hoping to join for the reward money.
“I’ve always thought Rest-kun was so cool…”
“You have such elegance for a commoner; I knew you would rise to greatness!”
“If you don’t mind, could you share some tales of your bravery during the civil war?”
However, it wasn’t just boys hoping to serve who gathered. Among the girls, some approached Rest shyly. Their intentions, however, seemed less about seeking positions and more about aspiring to become concubines or mistresses.
“If you have business with Rest, I’ll handle it,” Viola interjected.
“Shall we have a nice chat?” Primula added with a smile that sent chills down the spines of those nearby.
“Greetings to the senior is essential, right? Stop sneaking around… You should talk to us first!”
“Yikes!”
Most of the girls, faced with such intimidation, scattered in a panic. It seemed they had avoided a honey trap… or so it appeared, until a few bold girls dared to confront Viola and Primula.
“Excuse me. My family runs a trading company, and I wanted to discuss logistics for the plain development…”
“I… I’m being mistreated by my parents who dote on my little sister. I’d like to be taken as a concubine, if that’s alright…”
“My maternal grandfather is the Minister of Finance. If I were to become a concubine, I could facilitate various arrangements…”
Despite the intimidation, these girls were determined to sell themselves, seeing a significant business opportunity in the development of the Demon Realm, or they had pressing circumstances that compelled them. They carefully explained the benefits of marrying them to Viola and Primula, engaging in earnest discussions.
“Hey, are you planning to take not just the sisters of the Rosemary Family but also a mistress? How enviable!”
“Leave me out of this. I don’t want to hear about it anymore.”
Rest wore an exasperated expression as Ruid patted his back.
“More importantly… could those who want to participate fill out this document?”
“What’s this paper?”
Rest handed out the prepared documents to all the boys who had expressed interest in joining the development efforts.
“As you can see, this document has sections for your name, background, and special skills. Once you’ve filled it out, bring it back to me. If you can’t complete it by after school, you can send it to the Rosemary Marquis House.”
What he handed them was essentially a “resume.” In this world, there existed a culture where individuals with social credibility, such as nobles, would write “letters of introduction” to promote talents. However, these letters often contained lengthy descriptions of how exceptional the individual was, making it time-consuming and labor-intensive to check multiple submissions.
Thus, Rest decided to adapt the concept of a resume from his previous life, creating a simplified version for those wishing to participate in the development.
“This way, you can see backgrounds and specialties at a glance, right? It’s concise, so it won’t take too long to fill out.”
“Wow, that does seem easy to understand. Even someone like me, who struggles with paperwork, could manage it.”
“But… unlike letters of introduction, isn’t there a risk of people lying? What if someone writes a fabricated background or skills?”
While Ruid nodded in appreciation, Maurice appeared somewhat skeptical.
“In that case, only the person who lied would suffer the consequences. When it comes to the development work, we’ll use the skills listed to assign tasks. If someone writes nonsense, they’ll definitely have a hard time.”
The same applied to backgrounds. While jobs unrelated to monster hunting wouldn’t be scrutinized too closely, if they were formally hired as vassals, their stated backgrounds would be investigated for truthfulness. If lies were discovered later, their accumulated achievements and trust would crumble.
“I see… This seems quite convenient. It could be applied to other job recruitments as well.”
“This method might spread in the future.”
Maurice acknowledged the usefulness of the resume, while Ruid chuckled jokingly.
Years later, their predictions would come true. Rest continued to utilize resumes for territory development, and eventually, other nobles began to imitate him. For jobs that required trust, they continued using letters of introduction, while resumes became standard for positions requiring a larger number of recruits. Eventually, resumes spread to private trading companies and became a common tool for hiring across both public and private sectors.
