Chapter 275: A Date (Yuri’s Perspective) ④
Rest glanced at the two monsters that had appeared, slowly shaking his head.
“Good grief… I thought today would finally be a relaxing day…”
He let out a deep, heavy sigh. What was supposed to be a leisurely picnic had turned into yet another battle. Climbing the hill toward them were a gigantic snake capable of swallowing a human whole and a massive, furry four-legged beast the size of an elephant. Both were formidable monsters. Any novice adventurer or soldier would likely be killed without a chance to resist.
“Alright! Rest, I’m leaving one of them to you!”
“Ah, Yuri!”
“I’ll take down the snake! You handle that furry one!”
Was she trying to say that the early bird gets the worm? Yuri dashed down the hill, leaping into battle against the giant snake.
“Gi-shaaaaar!”
“Yah!”
“Giih!”
Yuri’s sharp whip struck the snake’s head, sending it reeling. Seizing the moment, she grabbed its log-like body and hurled it away.
“Ta-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a!”
That girl is really reckless…
Rest watched as Yuri skillfully maneuvered against the giant snake, then turned his attention to his own foe. The large four-legged beast charged toward him.
“Wind Blade!”
Rest unleashed his magic. A sharp blade of wind sliced through the air, aimed at the beast, but it leaped sideways to evade the attack.
“Mu…”
“Grooow!”
The four-legged beast zigzagged as it approached Rest, clearly trying to throw off his aim.
“This one… does it know how to fight against a magician…?”
Perhaps it had learned countermeasures from battling magicians while hunting monsters on the Subnock Plain.
“I see, a troublesome enemy.”
“GROOOOOOOOOOOO!”
“That said… only second-rate magicians would fall to such tactics.”
It moved around, making it hard to target. This was a fundamental strategy against magic. Therefore, it was only natural for magicians to have countermeasures against fast-moving foes.
“Wind Ball!”
First, a simple countermeasure. Rest conjured a multitude of wind spheres around him and sent them rushing toward the four-legged beast.
“GROOOO!? “
The beast couldn’t evade the onslaught of wind balls. Even though they were basic magic, being hit by dozens would certainly inflict damage.
“Next up… Earthbind!”
Against the staggered four-legged beast, Rest unleashed another spell. Tendrils of earth shot up from the ground, binding the beast in place.
“Groow! Groow!”
The four-legged beast thrashed about, but the earthen restraints held firm. At this point, it was like a fish on a cutting board.
“Time to finish this… Thunder Bolt!”
“GROOOOOOOOOOOO…!?”
A powerful bolt of lightning struck the bound beast. The intense electricity caused its body to convulse, but eventually, it lay still. Looking down at the smoking creature, Rest nodded in satisfaction.
“Alright, how’s Yuri doing…?”
“Hey, Rest! I won!”
“Huh?”
Turning his gaze toward the sound, he saw Yuri at the foot of the hill, triumphantly standing on the head of the giant snake. The snake lay defeated, its head completely crushed, dark blood pooling around it.
“I won too! Looks like I’ve secured tonight’s dinner!”
“Give me a break… wait, huh?”
Rest felt a wave of relief wash over him, but it was quickly interrupted by a disturbance in his Life Search senses. A large presence was pushing through the underbrush, closing in on the victorious Yuri.
“Yuri! Behind you!”
“Yeah?”
As Yuri turned around, something leaped out from the bushes.
“Gi-shaaaaar!”
“Ah!”
The very same giant snake Yuri had just defeated reared its head, lunging to bite her. Caught off guard, Yuri’s eyes widened in shock as she was swallowed into the snake’s gaping maw.
