Commoner with Infinite Magic – Chapter 89

Chapter 88: A Gathering at the Rosemary Marquis House

“Wow, such an interesting thing happened! I wish I could have joined in!”

That evening, in the parlor of the Rosemary Marquis House, Viola expressed her disappointment as they discussed the events of the day. The members of the marquis family were all present, and Rest sat on the sofa, flanked by his sisters as usual.

After finishing a monster hunting mission in Count Valery’s territory, Rest had been challenged to a race by a young magician. He dashed across the ground and soared through the sky, arriving at the Rosemary Marquis House with a time difference of over three hours from his pursuers. The young magicians, including Nick, who had issued the challenge, faced considerable reprimands for their poor performance.

It was only natural. They had dared to challenge a man recognized by the daughters of the Rosemary Marquis House, only to suffer a crushing defeat.

“The young magicians seem to be quite lax! I must personally train them!”

This outburst came from Airish Rosemary, one half of the household’s leadership, who was also present in the parlor. As the mother of the beautiful sisters, Viola and Primula, she was a striking beauty herself, but her personality was that of a fierce warrior. It seemed she could not tolerate the inadequacy of the young men in the marquis family.

“Ah… please go easy on them. They didn’t mean any harm,” Rest interjected, recalling how the young magicians, including Nick, had apologized to him after arriving late.

“I’m sorry for being so cheeky!”

“We were outclassed, Young Master!”

Having been overwhelmingly defeated in the race, Nick and the others had no choice but to acknowledge Rest’s worthiness as a suitable husband for the Rosemary Marquis House. They recognized him as a man worthy of winning the hearts of both Viola and Primula, the stunning sisters. Their way of addressing him had shifted from “you” to “Young Master,” earning him their trust.

“That is a separate issue! A fierce general does not tolerate weak soldiers… The Rosemary Marquis House has no need for weak magicians!”

Airish crossed her arms, showing no signs of changing her opinion. It was unfortunate for Nick and the others, but it was now a foregone conclusion that they would undergo rigorous training.

“So… Father, has the issue in Count Valery’s territory been resolved?” Primula asked.

“Yes, there are no problems,” Albert, who had been seated in a rocking chair, nodded in response.

“We managed to eliminate most of the Locust Imps that had been causing trouble in Count Valery’s territory. While we can’t eradicate them completely, there shouldn’t be any issues for the rest of the year.”

No matter how many magicians were mobilized, completely exterminating monsters was impossible. The Locust Imps would eventually multiply and wreak havoc on the fields again.

“Count Valery’s territory has a vast grain-producing area, but they lack military strength due to their distance from the central region. In that regard, our interests align, as we have many magicians at our disposal. We must maintain a good relationship moving forward.”

Nobles were divided into central nobles, who thrived in the royal palace, and local nobles, who remained focused on their territories. The Rosemary Marquis House belonged to the former category. Although they owned land, Albert held the position of Court Mage Director and enjoyed the king’s favor. In contrast, Count Valery’s family belonged to the latter category, rarely venturing into the royal capital except for festivals, concentrating instead on managing their territory.

While local nobles might lack political influence, their limited opportunities to spend money at court often made them quite wealthy. However, this also meant they had fewer chances to hire capable personnel from the central region, resulting in a lack of military strength.

“As the head of a noble family, you must engage with not only lower nobles but also other nobles. Rest, you should keep this in mind.”

“Yes, understood,” Rest nodded.

Having lived as a commoner until now, he realized he would eventually need to acquire such diplomatic skills.

(I suppose I should seriously consider joining the Student Council…)

Establishing a connection with the Second Prince, Andrew, would be beneficial as he prepared to marry into the marquis family. The Student Council also included Lady Celestine, a duchess, which could provide him with ties to the Crocus Duke House.

“If Rest is joining the Student Council, I might as well join too. Celestine has invited me,” Viola chimed in.

“I want to join too! Lady Celestine asked me to come on board as well…” Primula added.

Rest had known that the two had been interacting with Celestine even when he wasn’t around, but it seemed they had also received invitations to the Student Council.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Rest exclaimed.

“If we said we were joining, you’d feel obligated to join too, right?” Viola teased.

“I thought I should wait for Rest to decide before responding…” Primula said shyly.

“Ah… I see.”

So they had respected his wishes. Rest felt a wave of gratitude for their thoughtfulness, almost moved to tears.

“More importantly… we’re staying in the territory until tomorrow, right? Let’s go shopping in town!”

“Viola, didn’t you just go shopping today?”

“What’s wrong with going two days in a row? It’s not the same as shopping alone!”

“Oh, I want to go too! Rest, you don’t mind, do you?”

Following Viola’s lead, Primula looked up at him with pleading eyes. With both of them asking, he couldn’t refuse.

“Of course not.”

Rest nodded, accepting their invitation to go shopping together.
