Chapter 308: Let’s Look for Work
“Well, I think this is about it?”
“Isn’t it more than that?”
With satisfied nods, Rio and I tapped the stop button on the smartphone that had been recording.
Since then, we had been busy tidying up our base until around evening. After laying down a soundproof barrier along the walls of the property, we dismantled the dilapidated old mansion and set up a Camping House. We also leveled the overgrown garden and connected the stone pavement from the entrance gate to the front door, tilling the ground along the path. It would look nice if we planted some flowers later.
The video captured the transformation of the house and garden over just a few hours. It goes without saying what we intended to use the footage for.
By the way, the entrance to the property was left unlocked. After opening the iron door that had a padlock, I had installed another locked door beyond it. I made it so that it could be unlocked by bringing the smartphone close. It was designed to respond to specific magic power, allowing both Rio and me to generate that magic power remotely to unlock the door.
“Maybe I should buy some motion sensor LED lights when I go back to Japan next time.”
I could stick the LEDs into the ground on either side of the flowers we planted. It would be nice if the lights turned on when someone passed by.
“That sounds great. Should we also spruce up the garden with some lighting? …I might be starting to enjoy this a bit.”
“Yeah, it seems like settling down somewhere might not be such a bad idea after all.”
“True.”
In that case, it felt like our home didn’t necessarily have to be in the middle of the city. With Dimensional Magic, we could go anywhere in an instant, as long as we remembered the coordinates of various towns. …But then again, would it be a hassle for anyone else to travel? It would be troublesome to pick everyone up and drop them off every time. I wonder if we could create something like a teleportation device, similar to how I made the smartphone in this world…
“Hey, I’ve finished over here!”
As I pondered our future, Ivan’s voice called out from behind the Camping House. Phonia and El were preparing dinner in the back. When I went to check, I found a makeshift barbecue pit ready, with Phonia adding firewood and igniting it with magic. El had already prepped the ingredients, and all that was left was to cook them.
“Looks like everything’s ready.”
“That looks delicious.”
“Of course, we can’t forget the grilled Mountain Pepper.”
“Put the grill on!”
“The fire’s lit!”
And so, the first night in Fortress City Satanis Garden deepened.
The next morning, we returned to the Adventurer’s Guild to officially start our activities. El stayed behind, taking on the role of a maid now that we had a base. However, she had requested Japanese seasonings, cookbooks, and Japanese language materials, clearly eager to immerse herself in her own interests.
As expected, the Adventurer’s Guild was bustling in the morning, and it seemed like any decent requests would be snatched up quickly.
“I’ll be right back.”
Since only Ivan needed a good request, he quickly made his way through the crowd toward the request board. Rio and I followed at a leisurely pace, peering at the board from behind a group of adventurers gathered around it.
“Oh, there are plenty of constant requests for monster subjugation.”
The constant requests were posted high on the board, with many seeking to hunt monsters for their meat. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that even A Rank had constant requests for meat hunting. We definitely needed to conquer all the constant requests for meat.
“Given how close we are to the Forest of Enchantment, it’s no surprise.”
“There seem to be a lot of monsters I’ve never heard of, so this could be exciting.”
“I’ll do my best too!”
Phonia, holding the now smaller Nil, was brimming with enthusiasm. Just then, Ivan emerged from the crowd in front of the board, holding a request slip.
“I’m going to take this one.”
It seemed he was heading to a pond southeast of the city to hunt for monster materials. He had two request slips, both of E Rank.
“Are you sure you can handle it alone?”
“I’ll be fine.”
I had heard that the monsters around here could be a bit tough, but perhaps I was worrying for nothing. Ivan could easily handle monsters one rank above him. It wasn’t uncommon for us to take on requests separately these days, and it seemed that not having a human babysitter made it easier to level up.
“I want to level up to D Rank quickly so I can go to the Forest of Enchantment.”
“Yeah, just let me know if anything happens.”
“Got it, I’ll do that.”
Waving goodbye to Ivan as he fluttered the request slips while heading to the counter, Rio and I stepped into the throng of adventurers surrounding the request board. While there were no S Rank requests posted, it seemed there were a decent number of requests below A Rank.
“Hmm, should we just head into the forest and explore a bit at first?”
“…That might be a good idea. I have a general idea of what requests are available.”
Rio, who had been taking pictures of the request board with her smartphone, wore a bright smile.
With that settled, we stepped away from the request board just as Ivan returned after accepting a request.
“Alright, let’s get going—”
“Finally found you, brat!”
Just as we were about to set off, a loud voice echoed from the entrance of the Guild, cutting through the air.
