Chapter 328: Home Security
As everyone settled into their seats and deepened their camaraderie, an important figure from the commercial filming team appeared, and the discussion turned to specifics. The story, infused with comedic elements, revolved around Princess Phonia, who had traveled from the Magic Kingdom to Japan. When it came to a scene where characters conversed in a foreign language, the use of the Otherworld Language surprised everyone. However, when someone asked, “What language is that?” I found myself at a loss. Having traveled extensively, I had never encountered a language barrier, so I didn’t even know the name of the language I was using.
After the commercial discussions wrapped up, I asked El, who informed me that the southeastern region of the continent spoke a language called Brinks.
“It’s not even on the list of translatable languages…”
“Could you say that again?”
It seemed that Unose-san was searching for the language on her smartphone. Himekawa-san also requested a repeat, offering her phone. The screen indicated that it was translating in real-time, converting spoken words into Japanese.
“Wow, such a convenient feature… I wonder if it will work properly?”
I tried speaking aloud, but it merely displayed “translating.” Just then, a string of text appeared.
“Hmm…? ‘Honor the cat. However, I cannot fathom the intentions behind it’—what on earth is this?”
“What is this?”
“Ahh ha ha ha!”
While we were all bewildered, only Jushiro-san burst into laughter.
“It seems it mistakenly translated it into a language that somewhat resembles ours.”
After a hearty laugh, he explained. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the smartphone had identified different languages for the first and second halves of the sentence. Incidentally, both were languages I had never heard of. Given that various Japanese place names were also quite odd, it was understandable that I was unfamiliar with many foreign names.
“Well then, I suppose that’s it for today. Let’s do our best during the actual filming.”
“Yes, thank you. We’ll take our leave now.”
With Jushiro-san’s announcement, the gathering dispersed, and the important figure exited the room, visibly excited.
“Hey, Phonia-chan, can I take a picture with you?”
Unose-san approached with her smartphone in hand, crouching down to ask Phonia.
“Sure, that sounds great!”
“That’s fine with me.”
Phonia turned her gaze towards me, seeking confirmation, and I nodded. Since she was a celebrity, this would likely boost Phonia’s recognition.
“Yay! —Look, let’s include the kitty too!”
Unose-san, who had made a small victory pose, stood beside Phonia and beckoned Himekawa-san to join. Himekawa-san, with a resigned expression, squatted down on the opposite side of Phonia.
“Nil, come here!”
Phonia, looking delighted in the center, called for Nil, and thus began our little photo session with three people and one cat. It seemed Himekawa-san also wanted to take pictures, as she pulled out her smartphone for a selfie.
“Come on, let’s take a group photo!”
In the end, we all gathered, including Jushiro-san, for a group picture before finally dispersing.
“Alright, let’s connect this here…”
We had already returned to the Camping House in the Otherworld. Afterward, Jushiro-san had informed me about the necessary equipment for setting up a Wi-Fi network, and I had gathered everything from an electronics store to begin the setup. There was indeed a LAN port in the Japanese apartment building, so I connected a cable coated in Mithril and extended it through the Interdimensional Hole, pulling it from the other side. I also extended a power cable, setting up a router on the Otherworld side, which should suffice for now. To avoid a tangle of wires for powering the appliances, I had run several cables, so there were no issues.
“Now I just need to enable the Wi-Fi on my smartphone, right?”
“Yes, that should work.”
“Whoa… it’s connected…!”
As I wiped away the nonexistent sweat from my brow, El was the first to exclaim in awe. Ignoring her tearful reaction, I enabled the Wi-Fi on my own smartphone.
“Oh, it’s working!”
I wandered around the house, and the connection remained stable. It was far more comfortable than picking up signals leaking from the Dimensional Rift.
“Alright, next up is the surveillance camera.”
After enjoying the connected smartphones for a while, I stepped outside. Using Earth Magic, I created a sturdy base at the top of the wall surrounding the house, installed a camera to capture the gate, and enclosed everything except the lens. The power cable was drawn in through Spatial Magic, and since there was no need to cross dimensions, it was a breeze. I also set up a surveillance camera on the other side of the wall, where the back alley lay. By the way, the network was connected via Wi-Fi.
Upon returning to the house, I turned on the large 100-inch television I had acquired from Japan and switched it to multi-external input mode. The TV was connected to the network, allowing it to display up to sixteen external video feeds on a single screen. Currently, I had it set to a 2×2 four-screen mode, with the front and back views of the house displayed in the upper left and upper right corners, respectively.
The router was also connected to external storage, allowing us to save footage from the cameras and TV programs. It claimed to have a capacity of 128 EB, but I was no longer sure what that unit meant. I thought smartphones were measured in PB, but what on earth was EB? Where had gigabytes gone?
“Wow, it’s displaying perfectly!”
“Awesome! This is the front of the house, right?”
“Science is amazing…”
“Fabulous… I wonder what kind of mechanism is at work here…”
The reactions of the three from the Otherworld were each amusing.
“Heh heh heh. Actually, there’s a camera here too.”
With a teasing tone, I pulled out another camera, powered it on, and pointed it at Phonia. After a moment, her image appeared in the lower left corner of the TV in the living room, and Phonia’s ears perked up.
“Oh, there I am!”
Looking delighted, she glanced around, and it seemed she had spotted the camera I was holding. Now, she was alternating her gaze between the camera and the TV, trying to look at the screen while facing the camera, resulting in a rather comical expression.
