Chapter 384: Two Designated Requests
The next day, I made my way to the Town of Isolage to accept Mr. Miles’s designated request. It seemed Ivan had visited this place several times before, but it was my first time stepping into the Adventurer’s Guild here. I figured it would be best to meet Mr. Miles after accepting the request.
The atmosphere of the guild was much the same as any other.
Rough-and-tumble adventurers were in abundance, while the more reserved individuals were few and far between. The Adventurer’s Guild in Isolage was no different.
“I heard there are designated requests available. Do you have any?”
I had tried to avoid the busy morning rush, but the guild was still bustling with activity. When my turn came at the reception counter, I presented my Guild Certificate and inquired.
“Y-yes! Please wait a moment!”
The staff member, visibly nervous after checking my certificate, retreated into the back of the counter. The gazes of those around me momentarily focused on me before quickly dispersing.
“Um, Shu-san, there are indeed two designated requests available. Are you able to accept them?”
“Two?”
I asked, puzzled, and the staff member nodded as they glanced at the paper in front of them.
“Yes, there are two. One is a request from Mr. Miles of the Rashiyu Trading Company to catch a giant fish outside the bay, and the other is an investigation request. The details are to be provided by the lord of this town, so I’m afraid I can’t provide more information…”
“Hmm.”
An investigation request with unclear details, huh?
“I can’t accept something so vague.”
“Uh? W-well, the requestor is the lord of this town…”
The staff member emphasized the importance of the requestor, but it wasn’t going to change my answer.
“That doesn’t matter.”
“There shouldn’t be any rules against declining, right?”
“Ah, yes… that is correct…”
The staff member wore a reluctant expression, but there was nothing they could do against our firm stance. After all, it’s unlikely anyone would refuse a designated request from a noble. However, for us, nothing was more important than the development of our base. We had various items we wanted to order from Mr. Miles to enhance our base’s interior, so accepting his request was not unwelcome. We had promised to continue our dealings with him, after all.
“That being said, I’ll only accept Mr. Miles’s request.”
“…Understood.”
With a heavy sigh, the staff member resigned to the situation, but at least I was able to accept Mr. Miles’s request.
“Well then, see you later.”
I completed the necessary procedures without incident and left the counter. As I exited the guild, I heard a click of the tongue from somewhere, but I wasn’t bothered by any further confrontation.
“I thought there might be something, but it was all quiet.”
“That’s probably how it usually is, but I doubt anyone in this country would dare to mess with us.”
“Ahaha! After all, we’re the ‘Nation Crusher!'”
I couldn’t help but think that it wasn’t just arrogance, but as I voiced my thoughts, Rio teased me. Just how widespread was this title, anyway…?
“Well then, let’s head to Mr. Miles.”
As I sighed, Rio linked her arm with mine and pulled me along.
“Ugh… fine.”
There was no way to stop a title that had spread so widely. The only thing I could do was to achieve something even greater to overwrite it. However, if the new title turned out to be even more embarrassing, it would be unbearable, and besides, it wasn’t easy to accomplish something significant enough to overwrite it.
“Is this the place?”
I stopped in front of a sign that boldly displayed “Rashiyu Trading Company.” Mr. Miles’s trading company was located near the border of the Noble District, a short walk from the Adventurer’s Guild. As one of the Six Great Trading Companies in this commercial nation, its scale was impressive.
Even though it was still early in the morning, there seemed to be a fair number of customers inside. I casually caught the attention of a staff member at the counter and showed them the request slip I had just received, asking them to relay my presence to Mr. Miles.
“Welcome! I’m grateful that you’ve come to accept the request so promptly!”
While waiting in the reception room at the back of the store, sipping tea, Mr. Miles arrived with a beaming smile.
“I can have the giant fish delivered to the harbor by noon today, but when do you need it by?”
“Eh?”
I brought up the deadline right away, but for a brief moment, Mr. Miles’s expression froze.
“Wait, wait! We’re talking about outside Soleige Bay, right? Just sending a ship out and back would normally take at least ten days!”
Seriously? Does it really take that long? I exchanged surprised glances with Rio, both of us equally astonished.
“Plus, we need to prepare the disassembly crew as well…”
Mr. Miles pondered deeply, but it seemed he was planning to gather the disassembly crew soon.
“For us, anytime is fine.”
“Yeah, we don’t have any urgent jobs at the moment.”
“You’re not denying it at all… Alright then, let’s aim for noon two days from now. I’ll make sure to gather the disassembly crew quickly.”
“Um, you don’t have to rush if it’s too much trouble.”
“Nonsense! They say haste makes waste. If we work quickly, opportunities will naturally arise!”
“Ugh.”
Mr. Miles seemed quite proud of himself, but if he said it was fine, we had no objections.
“Then we’ll bring it to the harbor in two days.”
“Yes, yes! I mustn’t delay. I’ll get started on preparations right away!”
With that, Mr. Miles stood up as if in a hurry, leaving us behind in the room as he hurried off.
