Isekai Life Starting from Moss – Chapter 9

(Alright, I’ve decided on this!)

I strongly focused on the name displayed in the evolution list. Then, my body was enveloped in light…

After the evolution, my body had become a monster, about 3 meters in length, with a huge mouth, countless vines, and multiple roots wriggling beneath its face, resembling an upside-down giant sea anemone.

I decided on Miasma. Yes, I’m slightly regretting it. However, I probably would have regretted choosing any of the others. Although the appearance and abilities are gruesome, I think this Miasma has the highest chance of survival. After all, the rank, which had been G until now, has suddenly jumped to B. It must be far stronger than any of the monsters I’ve defeated so far.

Moreover, I can now generate three more types of poison, and I’ve also gained resistance to each of them. And this “Miasma” skill is a terrifying attack method that combines all four types of poison.

My stats are also quite high, even at level 1. Once I level up, I probably won’t lose to any ordinary monster.
Rather, the humans might be the ones I should be wary of. I don’t know how strong the humans in this world are, but if plants and insects are this strong, there’s no way humans would remain weak. They must be hunting these monsters using their knowledge, ingenuity, and skills.
Also, the fact that Mandrake is one of the ingredients for a panacea means that someone is making it. The only ones capable of that would be humans with a fairly advanced civilization.

Therefore, it seems I need to be careful not to be found by humans. And with my next evolution, I’ll evolve into a more peaceful race!

I, who had evolved into a Mol… no, a Miasma, decided to first grasp the terrain around here. I knew the surroundings with Life Detection and Magic Detection, but since I could finally move, I thought I’d try exploring further.

I fully utilized “Hostile Detection” along with my usual detection, moving slowly and cautiously. Or rather, I could only move slowly. I didn’t have any particular destination, so I decided to head towards the star that seemed like the sun.

I noticed while moving that the Miasma can apparently hear sounds. It doesn’t have ears, so it must be sensing air vibrations with some other organ, but being freed from the silent world after so long made me feel a little more motivated.

Also, although this body is plant-like, it doesn’t have roots, and since it has a mouth, it must be carnivorous. The vines growing around its mouth can be extended, and I could use them to eat the animals and monsters I defeat.

(Can I really eat them raw?!)

Even though my current form is a monster, my heart is still that of a pure Japanese person! I can’t possibly eat the creatures I defeat as they are. However, I can’t use “Fire Magic,” so I have no way to cook them. Besides, since I’m a plant, I’d probably be weak to fire. I had no choice but to rely on the nutrients I could get from “Photosynthesis,” which was still active, to maintain this giant body.

About a week after starting to move south (as I assumed) from where I was reincarnated, towards the sun-like star, I was still in the forest. During this time, I was attacked by large boars, wolves, and even a giant tiger, but I defeated them all.
When I appraised them, they had grand names like Angry Boar, Dark Wolf, and Silver Tiger, but when I blew Miasma at them upon encountering them, they became confused, paralyzed, or fell asleep, and I was able to defeat them without much trouble. These three status ailments are applied randomly, but “Deadly Poison” is always applied, so they would eventually die if left alone. However, the sight of me spewing Miasma from my mouth looked like I was breathing out terribly foul breath, which made me feel a little down.

Still, it was helpful that I was able to level up without much effort, since my level had returned to 1. Even better, the levels of Life Detection and Magic Detection reached 10, allowing me to see the surrounding scenery in color, even though I don’t have eyes.

This world, which I was seeing for the first time, was very similar to Earth. The forests with lush grass were just like the mountains at my grandma’s house in the countryside. However, the size of the creatures that appeared and my own body were abnormal.

Even though my movement speed is slow, the fact that I haven’t even encountered a single road after walking for a week shows how vast this forest is. But, thanks to this vastness, I haven’t been found by humans so far. While I thanked the Goddess for her consideration (though she did say it was random), I still wanted to find something that would confirm the presence of humans. I don’t intend to stay in this form forever. Someday, I plan to evolve into a creature that can appear before humans.

While thinking about this, as I was walking while wriggling my roots, I heard the sound of metal clashing, and my Life Detection picked up several humanoid life forms. It seemed they were fighting wolf-type monsters. When I appraised them, the humanoid life forms were “Humans,” and the wolf-type monsters were Forest Wolves. Oops, it seems I’ve discovered not just traces of humans, but humans themselves.

I can’t appear before humans in this form. Thinking so, I tried to quietly return the way I came, but… I noticed something. One of the Humans wasn’t moving at all. And three other Humans were fighting Forest Wolves, protecting the unmoving Human.

(This is troublesome. What should I do? Even though they’re not moving, the fact that the three are protecting them means they’re not dead, right? As a former human, I can’t just abandon them…)

I pondered for a few dozen seconds, then made up my mind to head towards the group in battle.

~Side: Adventurer~

“Thomas! Are you alright over there?”

A blond young man, whose vital points were protected by a slightly dark silver light mail, called out to a large man in full plate armor who was using a large shield to defend against the fierce attacks of three Forest Wolves.

“Eric… I’m fine.”

The large man called Thomas only said those words, but contrary to his words, he was taking the fangs and claws of the Forest Wolves that his large shield couldn’t fully block.

“No, you’re definitely not fine! You’re not blocking them at all! Look, they’re coming this way!”

Behind the two, a small woman in black robes, who was holding a staff while covering a fallen woman in white robes, raised her voice in protest. One of the Forest Wolves that had slipped past Thomas was attacking the two of them.

“Flames, gather before me and strike the enemy, Fireball!”

The woman in black robes chanted a spell, and a softball-sized ball of fire appeared in front of her, flying towards the approaching Forest Wolf.

“Gyan!”

The fireball successfully hit the Forest Wolf in the face, causing it to flinch, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to defeat it with that one blow. Instead, the Forest Wolf, with burns on its face, glared at the small woman with even more hostility.

“Ugh, I’m out of mana…”

It seemed that this woman, who was a mage, had run out of options because the Fireball she had cast with her last bit of mana hadn’t done much damage. The swordsman-like man called Eric was being pushed back by a particularly large Forest Wolf, and the large shield man named Thomas was also fully occupied with defending against the fierce attacks of two Forest Wolves, so help couldn’t be expected from them.

This group of four adventurers was an F-rank party called “Gale Wind,” and they had come to this forest to hunt Green Worms. However, for some reason, they couldn’t find any Green Worms today, and they had inadvertently gone deeper into the forest than usual. There, they had unfortunately encountered a pack of E-rank Forest Wolves, and the healer woman had been taken out by the initial surprise attack. They were unable to escape and had entered into battle, leading to the current situation.

(((We might be done for…)))

Just as the three who were still barely safe thought that, it appeared—

~~~
“Gau?”
The first one to notice me was a Forest Wolf, which was about to pounce on a woman in a black robe. It probably had the leeway to do so because it hadn’t taken any damage, and it had the superior awareness of a wild animal.
Seeing me emerge from the bushes with a rustling sound, all the Forest Wolves scattered and fled.
“M-Miasma… Why is a B-rank monster here…?”
“Muu, is this the end?”
“Ah, to die from that stinky breath… the Forest Wolf would have been better…”
A swordsman-like man, a man with a large shield, and the woman in the black robe each voiced their honest impressions upon seeing me.
(I-I knew it, but I’m still hated after all…)
Being told that my breath stinks by the first humans I’d ever met, my heart was greatly wounded, and I quietly backed away and left the place.
