Reincarnated Captain Hunter’s Child – Chapter 12

Episode 12: Magic Class

“I see. This is going to result in injuries. Young Lady, please don’t stray from my side.”
“Indeed. This is dangerous.”

It was my first Magic Class. As I observed the scene, I protected myself and the Young Lady with Barrier Magic.

“Ho ho ho ho ho! It seems you have a rather useful retainer!”
“Excuse me, would you mind if we joined you?”

It was the Young Lady from the Sandfelds House, whom Evelyn spoke with yesterday, and her retainer. Lady Evelyn’s curls are singed. It seems she’s already been caught up in it.
The Young Lady nodded, so I expanded the Barrier.

“Honestly, it’s deplorable that there are so many students using magic for the first time in class.”
“Yes, they should have grasped their own capabilities beforehand.”

The two Young Ladies said such things, and they were absolutely right.
The families that have protected the people from the threat of Monsters and expanded the kingdom’s territory are the noble families. These nobles have more Magical Power than ordinary people. Naturally, the children of these nobles, who inherit that blood, also have more Magical Power than the average person.
And now, these children are trying to use magic for the first time. They haven’t grasped their own capabilities, and they’re building up and unleashing uncontrollable amounts of Magical Power. Such a scene was unfolding before my eyes.
Of course, there are those like our Young Lady, who have been training in their own territory, but it seems that there are also not a few children who have been raised with magic forbidden to them because it’s dangerous. Well, certainly not every family can afford to hire a magic tutor, so I suppose that’s unavoidable.
Still, isn’t it a problem for the educational setting to allow them to use magic while leaving the danger of sudden outbursts unchecked?
I wish the school would be more considerate… The teachers are wearing full armor and robes, completely geared up for defense.
Injured people are being swiftly carried away and quickly treated. No, I want you to do something about the outbursts, not focus on that.

“This is really dangerous.”

While stopping a flying fireball with the Barrier, I turned my gaze to the person who launched it. Hey, don’t look at me with such a surprised expression, followed by eyes that look like you’re staring at your parents’ killer. Even if that flimsy, uncompressed magic hit, my Barrier wouldn’t even flinch.

“Non-Attribute Magic, is it? It’s rare, or perhaps not?”
“I’ve heard that many people are suited to Non-Attribute Magic. However, I don’t think there are many people who can use it at this level.”
“Cladfield is excellent, after all.”
“Thank you, Young Lady. But, well, it’s rather plain.”

Telekinesis is convenient for grabbing things far away, and Barriers are suitable for defense, as you can see. Body Enhancement and Body Activation are also easy-to-use magic. However, regardless of the effect, many of them look plain.

“Magic also needs to be flashy, you know?”
“It seems so.”

I’m desperately trying to hold back my laughter as I watch the people chanting and casting spells with all their might. Is this some new form of torture?

“Next, Cladfield.”
“I’ll go since I was called. Please don’t move, as I’ll leave the Barrier up.”
“Ah, understood.”
“Ho ho ho ho ho! We will.”

The Young Ladies nodded, so I reapplied the Barrier and stepped forward.

“Use some attack magic, anything will do. Just hit or break the target.”
“Understood.”

I put my hand forward as the teacher instructed and released magic.
With a crack!, the wooden target shattered.

“…I’m sorry, I couldn’t see it. Was that Wind Magic, Air Burst?”
“No, it was Non-Attribute Shock.”
“…I see, I understand. There was no incantation, though…”
“I don’t need it.”
“…Understood. Next is your master. Go and call her.”

He understood. Good, good.

“Understood. I’ll bring her.”

I went to the Young Lady and moved together.

“Wind, slice through! Wind Cutter!”

When the Young Lady released her magic, the target was cleanly cut.

“Excellent work.”
“A splendid result.”

Not only I, but the teacher also praised the Young Lady. Is this teacher a commoner?
Ah, here it comes again. I put up a Barrier centered on the Young Lady.

“Whew, this is really dangerous.”
“There isn’t enough time to watch each person individually. Cladfield, thanks for the Barrier.”
“No, I thought the teacher wouldn’t need it. But, isn’t there something more that can be done?”

It seems the teacher is also fed up.

“Originally, we were taking levels and dividing them up. However, there are quite a few children who don’t tell the truth in individual interviews. So, we have them actually experience the pain before dividing them into classes.”
“…There are cases where they get labeled as a family that can’t afford a tutor, after all.”

The Young Lady also understands. Is this a story about noble, mysterious pride?

“That’s right. In that respect, you two are sufficiently at the passing level. From now on, you will mainly focus on lectures on the use of magic.”
“Understood. Thank you, teacher.”
“Thank you very much. Then, we’ll be on our way.”

The explosions subsided, and the dust settled, so we moved near the wall as before.
Children are approaching us without saying a word… The Young Lady, don’t glare, okay?
When I shook my head slightly, she gasped and returned to her dignified expression.

“Cladfield, can you expand the Barrier enough for them to enter?”
“There is no problem.”
“Is that so? Would you like to enter if it’s within my retainer’s Barrier?”

Could you ask a little more gently?
Look, there are some people who look unhappy.

“Ah, I’m sorry, but could you?”
“I, too… would like to be in your care.”

Even if the magic doesn’t hit directly, there’s a lot of dust flying around in the training room, where explosions and flames are flying. It’s unpleasant even for non-noble children. If they can prevent it, they’ll want to prevent it.
Before I knew it, a group of nobles who weren’t injured had formed around the Young Lady. You don’t have to stick so close, the range of the Barrier is wide… Ah, you can’t see it, can you? I’ll draw a line on the ground.
Ah, Lady Evelyn got caught up in it again.
