Rogue Prince – Chapter 42

■Cedric of Chevalier’s Perspective

“And so…”

Today, as usual, I was neglecting the boring lesson, pondering with my arms crossed.
Of course, about my beloved sister and her fiancé, Prince Harold.

It was the first time since I entered the Royal Academy that Alexandra contacted me, saying, “I want to see my brother.” I abandoned all my classes and returned to our townhouse in the Royal Capital, only to be met with a request to “make Prince Harold our adopted son-in-law.” I couldn’t help but clutch my head in dismay.

Certainly, Prince Harold is the Third Prince, and it wouldn’t be unheard of for him to become an adopted son-in-law to a foreign princess or a daughter of a powerful noble family who lacks a male heir.
However, the Chevalier family has me, a legitimate heir, and there’s no need to welcome Prince Harold as an adopted son-in-law.

More than anything, how could I accept the ‘Incompetent Rascal Prince’ who has stolen and monopolized the one and only flower (….) that the Chevalier family is so proud of?

That’s what I was thinking…

“Haa… it’s quite complicated…”

I pressed my temples and sighed.
First of all, I understood that the world’s evaluation of Prince Harold was all just ridiculous rumors when I met him yesterday.

Of course, it was the ultimate humiliation to be defeated in a Sparring match and to show such an unsightly figure in front of my beloved Alexandra, but he undoubtedly won through his own ability.
He defeated me, who boasts the top position in both academics and practical skills at the Royal Academy, surpassing even the First Prince, Prince Cardis, who is the same age.

Also, though I hate to admit it, from the moment I first met Prince Harold at the townhouse, he was always polite and never behaved in the humble or arrogant manner that the rumors suggested.
More than that, as an older brother, I felt complicated seeing Prince Harold caring for, respecting, and supporting his fiancée, Alexandra.

And then, there’s the current situation Prince Harold is in within the Royal Palace, which I heard about during last night’s long-awaited dinner with Alexandra.
Since Prince Harold originally had a bad reputation, it’s a well-known fact that his position within the Royal Palace is not good, but that’s nothing new.

However, I was surprised that he, who had been so subservient to Prince Cardis until now, had broken away from him, but I was even more surprised by Prince Cardis, who caused it.

He actually incorporated that ‘Tainted Prince’ into his faction.
As his right-hand man (..).

The illegitimate child who became the Fourth Prince by shamelessly claiming the Right of Succession as a mere Baron’s daughter and mistress.
There may be room to sympathize with his background and circumstances, but as the Chevalier family, the largest faction in the kingdom, we cannot give our ‘Dragon’s Favor’ to such an existence… or so I thought.

“Cedric, what’s wrong?”

Prince Cardis stared at me with a puzzled look.
It seemed the lesson was already over.

“Ah, no… I was just thinking about something…”
“I see.”

As I said that to gloss over the situation, Prince Cardis lost interest and left the classroom.

And yet.

“…What is it?”
“Prince Cardis, there’s something I’d like to ask you.”

Before I knew it, I had grabbed Prince Cardis’s arm and stopped him.
In the first place, what was I going to ask Prince Cardis? Was I going to ask him about ‘Prince Harold’s offer to become an Adopted Son-in-Law to the Chevalier family’ or ‘his withdrawal from Prince Cardis’s faction’? How foolish.

However, Prince Cardis is not a fool either. He seemed to have read my thoughts, and he sighed deeply.

“I’m also surprised. I’m disgusted by the foolishness of my incompetent (….) younger brother.”
“………………….”

I see. Despite having the intelligence to understand my intentions, he can’t understand his own brother’s feelings.
He insulted the man who had served him so far, and yet he doesn’t really understand why this result was brought about.

At this rate, Prince Harold certainly won’t be rewarded.

“Well, I’m planning to return to the Royal Palace after the morning classes and talk to Harold. You and I will be relatives soon, so don’t worry about it.”

What is this man misunderstanding?
It’s as if he thinks that if Alexandra and Prince Harold get married, the Chevalier family will support him.

Your are not involved in their marriage at all.

“See you then.”

Prince Cardis left the classroom with his attendants, this time for sure.

“Alexandra, I finally understand.”

Both Prince Harold’s desire to leave the Royal Palace and my sister’s wish to protect him.
More than anything, she clearly told me last night.

“My ‘Dragon’s Favor’ is entirely for Prince Harold.”

The true (..) head (..) of the Chevalier family, who possesses the Sacred Sword Balmung, has dedicated the ‘Dragon’s Favor’.
If so, then I, as a vassal, have no choice but to obey.

Now that I understand everything, I no longer hesitate.
From now on, I vow to be of assistance to Prince Harold as well.

…Well, that doesn’t mean I’ve approved of Alexandra and Prince Harold’s engagement, though.
