After a night of revelry, I decided to take a break from adventuring the following day, catching up on sleep during the morning hours.

When I returned, I half-expected Larni to say something, but all I got was a simple, “You smell like alcohol!” which thankfully spared me from losing too much trust with the girls.

I woke up around noon and decided to rouse Freinir, who was clinging to me in her sleep, so we could all have a meal together.

It seemed that Larni and Sfenia had also taken it easy at the inn during the morning, but Mariane had already gone to the Adventurers’ Guild.

“Are we going to conquer the other C-Rank dungeon?” Sfenia asked at the dining table, her gaze towards me almost glistening with excitement.

“Yeah, it’s fifteen floors, so we should take three days to clear it. After that, if Count Lautrec calls for us, we’ll have to head there, but I doubt we’ll receive a summons in just three days.”

“No, the town’s magistrate will likely communicate via the ‘Transference Magic Tool,’ so I think the message will come quickly,” she replied.

“Transference Magic Tool?” I asked, intrigued.

“Are you not familiar with it? It’s a magical device that allows communication over long distances. However, it consumes a lot of magic stones, so only a select few can use it.”

“Such a thing exists…,” I mused, recalling how Mariane seemed to be in close contact with the Grand Master of the Guild. It made sense that such magical tools would exist.

“Speaking of which, does this town have a magistrate? It feels like we might be summoned there first,” I said.

“Perhaps the Guild has already received a summons. The inn won’t get direct messages, so Mariane will likely inform us when that happens.”

“That makes it uncertain whether we can enter the dungeon tomorrow.”

While battling formidable foes is exhilarating, dealing with influential figures feels burdensome. If my goal were to rise in status, I should be thrilled, but my only aim is to survive. Given the situation with Freinir, I particularly want to avoid contact with the nobility.

As I sighed, Larni perked up her ears.

“Well, if we can receive a reward, we should definitely accept it. It would be unthinkable to defeat the ‘Kin of Twilight’ and receive nothing in return.”

“I’ve heard stories of adventurers being elevated to nobility in the past. It wouldn’t be surprising if that happened to you, Soushi.”

“No, Frei, that’s a bit too much flattery. Besides, I’m not interested in rising through the ranks.”

“I believe you could fulfill such a role splendidly. At that time, I would—”

“Oh, it seems Mariane has returned.”

Just as Larni said, Mariane entered through the doorway. However, what caught my attention was the man clearly dressed as an official standing behind her.

Mariane approached me and whispered, “Soushi, the town’s magistrate has summoned you. After finishing your meal, please accompany this gentleman to the magistrate’s residence.”

“Understood. I’ll prepare and head out immediately. I only need to go alone, right?”

“Yes, that seems to be the case. Also, Count Lautrec happened to arrive in town for an inspection yesterday evening. So, you will likely meet him there.”

“Wait…,” I said, feeling a mix of luck and anxiety. Meeting a count means dealing with a high-ranking noble. I wished I had a bit more time to prepare myself mentally.

I tidied myself up as best as I could and boarded the carriage with the official who had come to summon me.

After about five minutes of being jostled along the cobblestone road, the carriage came to a stop in front of a particularly large mansion located in the town’s central district.

I followed the official inside. The magistrate’s residence was lavishly decorated but not excessively so, making it a suitable grand estate.

We were led to a reception room adorned with various artworks and instructed to wait there.

As I idly admired the art pieces, there was a knock at the door, and in walked a gentleman in his forties, looking earnest, alongside a stern-looking elderly man with a white beard. Following them were two individuals who appeared to be Awakened Ones, likely their guards.

It was clear from their attire that the elderly man with the white beard was Count Lautrec himself. Even someone like me, who had only worn cheap clothes, felt overwhelmed by the intricate design of his garments. The suit my boss bragged about would seem like fast fashion in comparison.

As I stood and bowed, the gentleman in his forties returned the gesture first.

“I apologize for summoning the town’s hero at such a busy time. I am Rodnik, the magistrate serving under Baron Bartran. First and foremost, I wish to express my deepest gratitude for saving this town from its crisis. Thank you very much.”

“I am Soushi, a C-Rank adventurer. Regarding this matter, I merely fulfilled my duty as an adventurer. However, if it means the town has escaped disaster, then I am pleased.”

As I responded with a hint of humility, Rodnik appeared somewhat surprised. It seemed he didn’t expect adventurers to adhere to etiquette. However, the elderly gentleman’s expression seemed to grow more serious.

“Hmm… I see. To be the one who defeated the ‘Kin of Twilight’ indicates you are no ordinary adventurer. Now, while I called for you, this town is under the domain of Count Lautrec. Therefore, the following discussion will be conducted by the Count himself, so please be aware of that.”

As Rodnik stepped aside, Count Lautrec took a step forward.

I hurriedly knelt and bowed my head. I genuinely had no idea how to respond… but I felt like this was how it was done in games.

“I am Soushi, the adventurer. It is a great honor to meet you, Count Lautrec…”

“Ahahaha, well, well. I have heard about you from Viscount Barius. You are a very promising adventurer with a sense of decorum. However, in this country, there is no need for such formalities with adventurers. While it may be different when dealing with the royal family, for today, you need not be so stiff.”

“Y-yes…”

When I raised my head, the stern expression from earlier had vanished, replaced by a kindly, grandfatherly smile from the Count.

“Then, it seems that your encounter with the ‘Kin of Twilight’ was purely a matter of chance.”

“Yes. In that situation, it seemed no one could step forward. Thus, I had no choice but to act, as I was barely able to move after being exposed to the power of the ‘Kin of Twilight.'”

In the reception room, I sat across from the Count at a seemingly expensive table. Behind him stood the guards, and Rodnik remained at his side.

“I have heard that the ‘Soul Force’ is a power possessed by the ‘Kin of Twilight.’ It is said that there are those who can choose their opponents through it. Since you were able to act despite that, you must undoubtedly be a strong individual.”

“I am honored. However, I am still inexperienced and unsure of my own strength…”

“To have become an adventurer with such strength in less than six months is quite interesting. I have never heard of anyone awakening at such a young age, almost the same age as my son.”

The Count stroked his white beard, narrowing his eyes. Now that I think about it, he might be around the same age as my father. However, the difference in their presence was so vast that it was hard to see.

“Very well, that will suffice regarding the circumstances leading to your victory. Many have witnessed your defeat of the ‘Kin of Twilight,’ and the magic stones submitted to the Guild will confirm the truth.”

“Thank you very much.”

“This matter will be communicated to the Adventurers’ Guild, and I will also relay it to the royal family. You will likely receive some form of response from the royal family in due time.”

“May I ask how long it might take to receive a response from the royal family?”

“Hmm… The report should reach the king and the prime minister within three days. After that, they will select a reward… it will likely take about three weeks.”

It seems that bureaucratic processes take time even in this world. However, considering the royal family, the volume of work must be immense, so three weeks might actually be considered quick.

As I pondered this, the Count leaned forward slightly and lowered his voice.

“By the way, I have heard that your party is particularly strong against the Undead. Is that true?”

“Well… We do have members who can use Holy Attribute Magic, so I believe we are stronger than other adventurer parties.”

“Hmm. The adventurer who defeated the ‘Kin of Twilight,’ along with companions who can use Holy Attribute Magic, is quite impressive. Reynan, Reysei, what do you think?”

The Count turned to look at the two guards.

Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the two guards had remarkably similar faces. It was clear they were of different genders, but both had androgynous features and appeared to be in their early twenties. They were likely twins, which would be quite rare for Awakened Ones. Both were dressed in ornate clothing befitting high-ranking nobles, but their swords and short staffs were practical.

“Yes! If they are adventurers who have defeated the ‘Kin of Twilight,’ I believe there should be no problem!”

The male guard responded, his earnestness evident in his tone.

“I agree as well~!” The female guard’s speech, however, felt out of place, making me want to buckle at the knees. The Count nodded and turned back to me.

“Very well, Soushi. In fact, I have a request for your party. There has been a large emergence of Undead not far from my territory, Balbados, and I would like you to investigate the cause. Since Balbados is also close to the royal capital, I believe it would be a suitable place for you to stay.”

As I sensed the beginning of a new troublesome event, I understood that this was an obligation that high-ranking adventurers could not escape.
