Chapter 194: On the Road
A peculiar procession was making its way along the highway of the Forest Country (Reburesta).
At the forefront was a sophisticatedly designed carriage drawn by four horses, accompanied by its guards. This was a carriage typically used by officials of Reburesta—rare, but not so unusual as to draw excessive attention. The only notable aspect was the unusually large number of guards accompanying it.
The real spectacle, however, followed closely behind the carriage.
A massive Golem, moving with its six legs, towered over the carriage, its length far exceeding that of the vehicle at the front. Its form, reminiscent of some biological creature, advanced in pairs, blocking the road. The smooth motion of its legs and the stable, unwavering torso evoked a primal fear in those who beheld it. If one did not notice the relief carved into its pure white exterior, resembling someone’s profile, it would not be surprising to report it as a new species of monster.
Yet, behind these two Golems, an even larger structure loomed.
Its width completely obstructed the highway. Its length was so great that it dwarfed four of the four-horse carriages lined up side by side. Numerous wheels suggested it was some form of artificial vehicle.
However, there were no animals tethered to pull this colossal contraption. It moved of its own accord.
Further back, there was another self-propelled freight cart, likely another Golem, though its size was only about half that of the massive one in front.
Following the six-legged Golem, a smaller six-legged Golem walked in a manner that suggested it was trailing behind. But this was an optical illusion. The small Golem at the rear was the same size as the leading six-legged Golem. In other words, there were three of these six-legged Golems and an even larger Golem that was twice their size.
The disparity in size was such that the leading carriage appeared like a mere toy in comparison.
The citizens of Reburesta, upon witnessing this procession, gazed up in astonishment.
They were currently traversing the trade route between the Forest Country (Reburesta) and the Afrasia United Kingdom. Various trade goods flowed from the East Gate city of the Afrasia United Kingdom, especially during its heyday, when large quantities of wheat, trained horses, and, most importantly, the precious Burning Stone (Tone Mag)—a magical strategic resource—were transported, leading to the establishment of extensive highways.
However, with the decline of the Afrasia United Kingdom, the highways had fallen into disrepair, and many inns had closed down.
Recently, however, the route had begun to regain some vitality, as the quantity and variety of trade goods had increased. Rumors spoke of the Afrasia United Kingdom being reunified, suggesting that domestic conditions had improved and trade had resumed.
That said, those working in the inns were merely laborers. They had no knowledge of the intricate details and no means to find out.
They had only been told not to be surprised if a new force, having unified the Afrasia United Kingdom, sent a delegation accompanied by a colossal vehicle. That was all they knew.
Considering the carriage’s speed, they were moving at nearly double the usual pace. The delegation of ambassadors typically changed horses daily, allowing for swift travel. As a result, they were expected to arrive at the inn prepared for them around noon.
The ambassadors and their guards were familiar with this inn, having relied on it during their round trips. Despite the astonishing nature of the procession, they were professionals, and soon water and fodder for the horses were prepared.
Of course, meals also needed to be provided for the ambassadors and their guards. While it wasn’t extravagant, it was still a meal of considerable quality by general standards.
Additionally, this time, preparations were necessary for the Afrasia United Kingdom’s delegation as well.
They had been repeatedly told that horse provisions were unnecessary, and though they were skeptical, they had not prepared any. Upon seeing the procession, it became clear why: there were no horses accompanying them.
Furthermore, no special arrangements were needed for the dining area; they were merely required to secure a spacious location, as the Afrasia United Kingdom’s delegation would set up their own space.
From the pure white Golem, people began to descend in a flurry. At first glance, they appeared to be a delicate group of girls.
These individuals swiftly unloaded their belongings from the massive Golem, setting up a dining area that could easily be mistaken for the open terrace of a high-end café in the capital.
“Guards, please take your seats over there. Ambassador, would you be comfortable here?”
“Ah… Yes… Your efficiency is remarkable. I am truly impressed.”
The ambassador’s aides hurriedly began their preparations. They spread out the food and drinks that the inn had prepared, issuing instructions to set up the lunch venue. Though they seemed somewhat taken aback, they were professionals.
Dishes were brought in one after another to the seated guests.
“I mentioned that we would prepare the meals for the journey, but I never expected you to set up tables and chairs in such a short time. Quite fascinating.”
“All of this is crafted from timber sourced from the Afrasia United Kingdom. Perhaps due to the harsh environment, many of the species are dense and sturdy, capable of withstanding the rigors of outdoor use. If you’re interested, I can add it to our trade items.”
“I would certainly appreciate that. However… I still find it hard to believe that such a large Golem can keep moving. It seems to be adjusting its speed to match ours.”
If they lingered too long, they would arrive at the next inn after sunset. As she began to eat, the head diplomat, Tiariada Eremes, continued the conversation.
“I can hardly believe it. That flying contraption up there is also operated by you, I presume? I’ve heard it is used for transporting goods, yet you also utilize these ground vehicles.”
“The sky is vast, but flying requires significant power. Moreover, there is the threat of monsters. The sky is not as free as you might imagine. Thus, we also operate transport vehicles on the ground.”
What had been prepared were small, easily consumable sandpans, cut into bite-sized pieces. These could be filled with various ingredients, allowing for a touch of elegance. Eating them with one hand, or even in a single bite, was not considered impolite, which was appreciated in such settings.
While Tiariada took a bite, the Communicator Androids, Alborea Heath and Alistarta Heath, nibbled delicately, their small mouths taking in the food. Standing side by side, they barely reached above shoulder height.
However, Tiariada did not underestimate them. Initially, she had been dismissive when first encountering the Paraiso, but as they engaged in conversation, their administrative efficiency and profound intelligence had earned her high regard.
In fact, she found them to be far more capable than herself.
They were mindful of their appearance, favoring outfits that reflected their youthful femininity. Yet, they did not wield their femininity as a weapon. They sought to be treated equally and preferred negotiations on equal footing, showing no signs of girlish dependence or overt emotions, conducting matters with a calm demeanor.
Dreißig, who was in charge of the East Gate city, hinted at a lineage connected to the royal family, suggesting they had received such education. However, it was only after beginning to interact with the two currently seated with Tiariada that she learned this was a trait common to their entire clan.
Both wore large cat ears atop their heads. They resembled ordinary foxes in color, but since they claimed to be cats, that was likely the case. Indeed, their tails, which they occasionally flicked, were thinner, longer, and more supple than those of a fox.
But setting appearances aside.
Tiariada found herself thoroughly inspired by their stoic demeanor. Their approach—advancing matters without overt displays of femininity—was viewed as highly commendable.
For someone with extensive experience as a diplomat, she found them to be the most agreeable yet formidable counterparts she had encountered.
